Telling the time in English is one of the easiest things to do, but despite that, students make many mistakes when they need to do so. In this blog, I will help to tell the time using two different techniques.
As you know, there are different ways to tell the time; one is the traditional method and the other is the digital method
The traditional way.
We have always learnt this typical method at school. If we use this method, we have to say the minutes before the hours (e.g.8:20- twenty past eight).
Some very important expressions to learn when using this method are
- O’clock – en punto. e.g. 8:00- eight o’clock.
- (A) quarter past– y cuarto.e.g. 8:15- a quarter past eight
- Half past– y media. e.g.8:30- half past eight
- (A) quarter to– menos cuarto. e.g.8:45- a quarter to eight
The digital way.
When using this method, we mention the hour first & then the minutes. It’s very simple, let’s have a look at these examples
- 8:55 – eight fifty-five
- 7:45 – seven forty-five
- 9:30 – nine thirty
- 7:15 – seven fifteen
- 6:20 – seven twenty
