Avance Deportivo in English – Esquí paralímpico

En el noveno programa de Avance Deportivo in English, incluido en el programa de radio de Avance Deportivo, os hablamos sobre esquí paralímpico.

Hello I’m Joshua I’m an English teacher at Nep English school and this is avance deportivo in English. Last week La Molina in Spain hosted the 2015 IPC Para-Snowboard World Championships from 24- 28 February. Dutch duo Chris Vos and Biban Mentel-Spee are riding high after becoming double world champions, having both won their second gold medals on Saturday. Vos, who finished top of the podium in the SB-LL1 category, has been in sublime form at these championships and rode with an assured confidence having claimed the world snowboard cross title earlier in the week. Russia’s Serafim Pikalov improved on his snowboard cross bronze medal and moved up one place on the podium to claim the silver. Making up the podium was Denmark’s Daniel Jorgensen.

Mentel-Spee is the undisputed Queen of para-snowboarding. Claiming her second world title of the week in the women’s SB-LL2 category, the victory means that the Dutch rider will once again complete the season undefeated. Australia’s Joany Badenhorst  who was racing with a cast on her arm after a fracture last week, raced her way to an impressive silver medal. The USA’s Heidi Jo Duce completed the podium in bronze.

The men’s SB-LL2 category was a straight dual between US teammates Evan Strong and Mike Shea. The final result saw the gold and silver medallists from the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games swap places on the podium, with Shea claiming the world title by just 0.26 seconds. Paralympic champion Strong settled for his second silver of the week, one place ahead of Finland’s Matti Suur-Hamari.

The 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama, Canada, opened on Saturday 28th February with over 100 athletes from 23 countries parading through the streets of nearby Invermere, watched by hundreds of local people.

During his speech at the opening ceromony Patrick Jarvis, Governing Board Member of the International Paralympic Committee, said: “Following the most successful Paralympic Winter Games in history a year ago, it is important that we focus even more on developing the sport and coming to venues like Panorama”.

All races will be held at Panorama Mountain Resort, with all ski races open for free public viewing on 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 10 March. The event concludes on Tuesday 10th March at Panorama. Panorama 2015 will be streamed live at Panorama2015.com and live results will also be available.

Now I’m going to explain some vocabulary.

– Hosted: When a city or a venue hosts an event means that the event takes place there for example Rio De janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic games and London hosted the 2012 Olympic games.

– Venue: A venue is a place where something will take place such as a concert, party or any other event.

– Swap: To swap means to exchange. To swap places with someone means to be in each others position.

Thats all for this week, join me next week for another show. Bye.
