En esta ocasión, nuestro profesor Joshua habla sobre voley playa en el programa de radio Avance Deportivo in English, dentro de la web Avance Deportivo.
Hello, I’m Joshua I’m an English teacher at Nep English school in Malaga and this is Avance Deportivo in English. Today I’m going to talk about beach volleyball. Beach volleyball started out in California as a pastime. Due to its popular appeal it developed into a thriving professional sport.
Beach volleyball made its Olympic debut at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Beach volleyball first appeared in the early 1920s in Santa Monica, California. Then what started out as just some family fun became a sport spreading rapidly across the world. By the 1930s, the game had reached countries like Czechoslovakia, Latvia and Bulgaria.
There are various differences between indoor volleyball and beach vollyball. For example, indoor vollyball courts are 18m x 9m whereas Beach courts are smaller–16m x 8m. Indoor volleyball courts have an parallel attack line that is 3m from the center line. Back row players must stay behind this line when hitting the ball.In beach volleyball player may hit the ball from anywhere on their side of the net and there is no attack line.
Another difference between indoor and beach vollyball is they use different balls. Indoor volleyballs are made of leather and are heavier than outdoor balls. Indoor volleyball is more about power and the heavier balls move quicker and can be hit harder. Beach volleyballs are softer, lighter and a bit bigger than indoor balls. The lighter weight allows them to float more in the air, allowing good players to use the weather to their advantage. Also, Indoor volleyball is played with six players per side and each person has a specialized position. However, Beach volleyball is typically played with doubles. There are no specialized positions, only a left and a right side. Most beach players are well-rounded and can hit, dig and block. In a serious match one player is dedicated to blocking and one to digging.
With indoor volleyball, a match consists of five sets, or games. The first team to reach 25 points wins the set. Three sets wins the match, and the fifth tiebreaker set, if necessary, is only played to 15 points. In beach volleyball, a match consists of a series of best-of-three games, with each game played to 21 points. Two sets wins the match, and the third tiebreaker set, if necessary, is also played to 15 points.
The men’s and women’s beach volleyball events in Rio 2016 will see 24 teams in each gender, with one place reserved for the host country in each case. The Games Qualification system will also see one place per gender granted to the winning national federation of the 2015 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships
Now I’m going to explain some vocabulary.
– Court: A court is a rectangular area that is marked out for ball games such as tennis, squash or volleyball.
– Tie-breaker: This is a part of a game which is used to decide who wins when both players have equal points.
– Dig: In volleyball a dig is when a player uses their forearms to pass the ball to their teammate.
– Block: A block is used to stop the ball crossing the net, players block their opponants shot before it reaches their side.
