Hello! I’m Joshua I teach at Nep English school in Malaga and this is Avance Deportivo in English. Today I’m going to talk about shooting. The Olympic program of the Shooting Sport consists in 15 different events. Olympians compete in nine men’s events and six women’s events in three different disciplines, with five events for rifles, five for pistols and five for shotguns.
International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Shotgun 2015 took place in Acapulco, Mexico last week. Shotgun shooters from all over the world arrived in Acapulco, where they tried to secure the 10 Olympic quota places to be awarded in Trap, Double Trap and Skeet events from 2nd -9th of March. More than 300 athletes coming from 54 countries participated in the competition.
The United States of America dominated the competition, finishing top of the Medal Standings with 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medals out of 5 events. In second place Italy won 3 medals 1 gold, silver and a bronze. The winner of theMen’s Skeet event was Vincent Hancock (USA) who scored the only record of the competition, equalling the 125-target world record established by Italy’s Valerio Luchini in 2014. In other men’s events FABBRIZI Massimo won the Trap event, HOLGUIN Jeffrey won the Double Trap.
In the womens category Reigning Olympic champion Kimberley Rhode ensured more success for the United States beating compatriot Caitlin Connor in the skeet final. The 35-year-old London 2012 skeet gold medallist, who also claimed double trap titles at Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004 and has won medals at five different Games. She also secured a Quota place for what would be her sixth Games in Rio de Janeiro next year. After qualifying with 72 targets, she scored a perfect 16 out of 16 in the semi-final and proved too strong once again in the final match against 24-year-old team mate Caitlin Connor. Another American COGDELL Corey won the women’s trap event.
This World Cup Stage also assigned 10 Rio 2016 Olympic Quota Places. The US and the Italian team collected 3 quota spots each, while Australia and the People’s Republic of China pocketed two each.
Now I’m going to explain some shooting vocabulary.
– Trap: Trap is the oldest shotgun shooting sport in America. Trapshooting derives its name from the device, called a trap, which throws clay targets into the air. Participants shoot at the clay targets thrown from a trap house located in front of the shooter. The trap rotates in a random sequence, presenting the shooter with a variety of shots.
– Skeet: Skeet uses the same clay targets as trap. Two trap houses are required in skeet”high house” at the left of the field and a “low house” at the right. Both traps throw targets at fixed angles. High-house targets start at a point about 10 feet above the ground, moving to the shooter’s right. Low-house targets move in the opposite direction starting from a point about three feet off the ground.
That’s all for this week, join me next week for another avance deportivo in English.
