What do you think of when you hear the word ´´British food´´?
Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is a cup of tea, a full English breakfast, fish and chips or even a Sunday roast dinner. You would be right, although there are many more typical dishes that have great flavour and are easy to make at home. British food has a bad reputation but maybe that’s just because people don´t actually know….What is British food.
British cuisine has a lot to offer and were going to discuss some of the typical dishes that are not often tried by foreigners and what a shame it is. For example, if you were to see ´´Bubble and Squeak ´´ or even ´´Toad in the Hole´´ on a menu would you be brave enough to try it? It´s dishes such as those that are at the heart of British cuisine and offer a unique flavour and style of food very different to other European countries. So what is Bubble and squeak and Toad in the hole? Well…. Bubble and squeak is typically eaten for breakfast, served with beans, eggs, bacon and sausage or even served on toast as a snack. It´s a versatile dish and can be served with anything, whether it´s breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can add whatever vegetables you want to the dish but typically it contains potatoes, carrots and a range of green vegetables. What´s more it is very easy to make. Toad in the hole is one of my favourite dishes and again another easy recipe to follow. What´s more it takes no time at all to whip up and works well for dinner parties or if you just want a warm and hearty meal. It consists of sausages and batter and is baked in the oven to create a crisp outer shell with juicy, delicious sausages nestled in between the batter. Normally it’s served with creamed mash, beans and gravy, although some people prefer the dish to be served with new potatoes and vegetables. Both options are just as delicious.
