One of the biggest truths related to the speaking test is that you need to prove the examiner that you master a good deal of grammar resources in order to obtain rather high marks.
But where can you learn them from? Well, here´s some good news! It´s all made out for you…just listen to the Gods of Rock!!
In the first place, practising a language by listening, learning, or even singing songs has not only been proven to work out, but it can also be a barrel of fun!
In the second place, technically speaking, there are billions of songs that can provide you with loads of practical examples of vocabulary, phrasal verbs, fixed expressions, and many more resources that will serve you as a guide, grammar-wise.
But let´s get to the point and let´s rock!! In this blog entry we will tackle 2 useful resources that you can learn by listening to songs: PASSIVE VOICE and CONDITIONAL SENTENCES.
There are many examples of Passive voice in the lyrics of your favourite tunes.
Let´s see one example!“Yesterdays” by Guns ´n´Roses. Click here to read the full lyric
Right in the opening line, Axl Rose sings:
“Yesterday, there were so many things I was never told”. You can quote him and even take it a couple of notches up by using Present Perfect. How about this?
“How often do you use the Internet?”
I have always been told that the Internet is a good instrument to learn new things so…(Answer continues…)
Not bad as an introductory sentence, don´t you think?
Now let´s see what Freddy has to offer. On the album “The Miracle” by Queen, there´s a beautiful (what a magnificent intro!) song called “Breakthru” where the late Mr. Mercury sang these lines:
“If I could only reach you,/ If I could make you smile,/ If I could only reach you/ That would really be a breakthrough”
Yes! You guessed it!! Conditional sentences type 2!! Why don´t you use it in the speaking test?
“Which country would you like to visit?”
“If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would visit…”
Piece of cake! This type of resource is very useful especially if you need to give an answer to a question regarding a hypothetical future.
There are many examples like these scattered through the lines of your favourite songs.
Learn them, automatize them and, above all, practise them aloud while you´re scrubbing the back of your ears clean in the shower and let all your neighbours know what a great singer you are!!
